At his Orange County, CA practice, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Farbod Esmailian offers Restylane, an FDA-approved dermal filler, to help patients achieve natural-looking rejuvenation. Whether you want to soften nasolabial folds and marionette lines, enhance lip volume, or restore definition to the cheeks, jawline, or under-eye area, Restylane provides a customizable, minimally invasive treatment with minimal downtime.

What is Restylane?

Restylane is an FDA-approved dermal filler made with hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance in the body that helps maintain skin elasticity, hydration, and volume.1 Over time, the body produces less HA, leading to facial wrinkles, fine lines, creases, and loss of fullness in areas like the cheeks, lips, and under-eye region.

The hyaluronic gel in Restylane injections helps restore lost volume, smooth smile lines and marionette lines, and enhance facial contours for a more youthful look.2 Dr. Farbod Esmailian, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Orange County, offers Restylane treatments to address signs of aging with natural-looking results.

Where Can Restylane be Used?

Preparing for Restylane

For at least one week before and one week after a treatment with Restylane, you should avoid taking non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), aspirin, high doses of Vitamin E, and the herb St. John's Wort. These products tend to thin the blood and may increase the incidence of bleeding at the injection sites. Increased bleeding may increase the incidence of bruising.

Restylane Treatment

Restylane treatment at the Orange County plastic surgery practice of Dr. Farbod Esmailian takes less than an hour.

Before beginning, Dr. Esmailian or a staff member may apply a numbing cream to the treated area. This is then wiped away, and a cold gel pack is placed on your skin for added comfort. Just before the injections, the area is thoroughly cleansed with an antiseptic.

Using an ultra-fine needle, Dr. Esmailian carefully injects the dermal filler to enhance volume and smooth facial wrinkles. Before leaving the office, be sure to schedule your follow-up appointment.

Restylane Recovery

For the first six hours after Restylane treatment, you should avoid touching the areas of the face that were treated. There is no massaging required. Ice may be gently applied to the treatment areas to help with swelling and potential bruising.

After Restylane treatment, you might experience:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Pain

These symptoms typically clear up within 7 to 10 days.

Cold compresses can be used to reduce inflammation. Ice should never be placed directly on the skin: The ice should be wrapped in a towel and then gently held on the inflamed areas. Ice can remain on the area for 20 minutes at a time. Holding ice on an area longer than recommended or without a covering could damage the tissues in the face.

Avoid intense heat, such as sun lamps, saunas, or sunbathing; in addition, avoid spending a great deal of time out in the cold.

Is Restylane safe?

Yes, Restylane is an FDA-approved dermal filler that is widely used to treat facial wrinkles, volume loss, and signs of aging. It has a strong safety profile when administered by a qualified provider. Like any injectable treatment, Restylane injections come with some potential side effects, though they are generally mild and temporary.

Possible side effects may include:

  • Redness or discomfort at the injection site
  • Itching or irritation in the treated area
  • Mild swelling or small lumps beneath the skin
  • Headache

Most of these effects resolve on their own within a few days. More serious complications are rare, especially when the procedure is performed by an experienced injector. If any side effects persist or worsen, patients should contact their provider for guidance.

Does Restylane hurt?

Restylane injections are generally well-tolerated, and most patients experience only mild discomfort. To enhance comfort, a topical anesthetic may be applied to the treated area before the procedure. Additionally, some Restylane formulas contain lidocaine, a built-in anesthetic that helps minimize sensation during the injection process.

Patients may feel a slight pinch or pressure at the injection site, but any discomfort is usually brief. After treatment, mild swelling or tenderness may occur, but these effects typically subside within a few days. If needed, a cold compress can help soothe the area for added relief.

What is the difference between Restylane and BOTOX®?

Restylane and BOTOX are both popular cosmetic treatments, but they work in different ways to address signs of aging.

  • Restylane is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that restores volume, smooths facial wrinkles and creases, and enhances natural contours. It is commonly used for nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lip augmentation, and cheek enhancement.
  • BOTOX is a neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes facial muscles to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, such as frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet.

While these treatments target different concerns, they can be combined for a more comprehensive rejuvenation. Restylane injections restore lost volume and smooth static wrinkles, while BOTOX prevents and softens expression lines, creating a balanced, youthful appearance.

When will I see the results of my Restylane treatment?

You should see the results of your Restylane treatment immediately, and results will continue to become more pronounced over the next few days as any swelling subsides.
