Breast implant illness (BII) describes a range of symptoms that some women who have undergone breast augmentation surgery experience, and depending on the severity, may need to see medical help to remedy.
Causes of Breast Implant Illness
The exact cause of BII is not yet fully understood.1 However, some women believe their symptoms are related to the materials used in their breast implants, such as silicone or saline implants. Others believe that their symptoms are related to an autoimmune response triggered by the presence of the implants in their bodies.
While there is no definitive evidence linking breast implants to BII, some studies have suggested that there may be a connection. For example, a study published in the Annals of Plastic Surgery found that women with silicone implants were likelier to report symptoms of autoimmune or connective tissue diseases than those without breast implants.
