Board Certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Esmailian, discusses the differences between his tummy tuck and liposuction procedures.
Many patients come to me with the idea that all they need is a liposuction procedure to tighten the abdominal area. Liposuction is a great procedure for removing the unwanted pockets of fat and fullness. Liposuction can essentially be performed on any body area that has the unwanted fat and fullness that can not be rid of with diet and exercise. The one area that can be disappointment for the patient and the physician is the liposuction of the abdominal area in cases where a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty procedure would be better option. Liposuction is not a substitute for a patient who really needs a tummy tuck.
Patients who are better candidates for a tummy tuck or abdminoplasty procedure are those that are older, have had multiple pregnancies, have loose skin, stretch marks or mainly skin to remove. Liposuction works best for the younger patient that has very good skin tone and is at a reasonable target weight.
